Energy Efficient Windows

How to Select Energy Efficient Windows

When looking to increase your home's energy efficiency, it is important to select high performance windows that fit your climate zone. There are many incentives in choosing energy efficient windows for your home, such as tax rebates, lower heating/cooling costs and increased occupant comfort.

Through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA), you can receive 30% of the cost of high efficiency replacement windows, up to $1,500! All of our windows are approved by EnergyStar for this tax credit, so you can save even more with Atlas!

Energy Star window efficiency is determined by several properties, including the level of glazing, insulation and solar heat gain. Simply, your windows should reflect heat, maintain a constant indoor temperature and be sealed properly. You can determine the type of energy efficient window you need by which climate zone you are located in.

The farther north you are, the higher amount of insulation you need. The amount of heat that escapes your home is deemed the U-Factor where the lower the better for colder climates. For the southern climates, the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) is more important for choosing windows, because this value tells you how much heat from the sun is reflected away from the house. Again, the lower the better for warm climates.

Those variable aside, high efficiency windows will help insulate your home from both heat gain and heat loss. Another major advantage to investing in these windows is that in a short period of time, they pay for themselves with the money they save in heating and cooling bills. According to Energy Star, the savings could equal up to $500 annually!

In addition to saving money, these windows can help reduce your home's impact on the environment, but using less carbon to heat or cool your home. You could prevent 80-4500 lbs. of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere annually as well! With high efficiency windows, you can choose a more green way to save some green.
